Listen to my girlfriend, she's a smarty

from one usual unusual to another…

there’s a difference (some thoughts):

gay: denotatively referring to having sexual relationships with those of the same gender, colloquially tends to mean a more hegemonic identity, less radically-inclined politically (perhaps more gender conforming or explicit in their sexuality).  in some communities, thought to adhere to a more rigid gender binary.  may see sexual preference as the only difference separating one’s self from conventional norms and often espouse hrc values.

queer:  often used as a blanket term for the spectrum of members in the lgbtq community.  can encompass identities along both the gender and sexuality spectrums and often associated with more radical politics and individuals that may not hold the gender binary in such high esteem, as it acknowledges relationships that cannot be defined within the confines of the prefixes “homo” or “hetero” and sexual attractions or personal identities that may not fit cleanly into and/or categories.

of course, language is cumbersome and adaptable…as are identities.

reclamations, alterations, abuse, and misuse (as long as it’s well-informed!) encouraged.
